Its color is typically greyish red, but it can change color from bright red to copper red. It has a dark stripe running across its eye if observed from the top when it is under water. Mangrove snapper are typically much smaller than Cubera, but when they are of similar size, the two species can only be distinguished by examining the tooth patch on the inside roof of the mouth. The best way to distinguish between the two species is dog snapper has a lighter triangle of color with a blue band under the eye and large, sharp fangs in the front canines , hence its common name. These fangs can deliver a painful bite, even in a small fish.

Swim jigs have a reputation for catching big bass out of heavy cover. There is no telling how many tournaments have been won or giant bass caught on a swim jig. Fishing a swim jig can be as easy as taking one out of the package, putting on your favorite trailer and casting it out towards cover or structure then reeling it back in. Sure you will catch fish doing that, but if you really want to catch big limits or giant bass consistently, presentation is the key to being successful.

What swim jigs do better than any other jig is come through cover and structure effortlessly while resembling forage.

Here fly anglers can experience great fishing either off the groins and beaches into the Altlantic Ocean or along the inlets into large rivers or the flats and sod banks of the back bays. It’s a challenging fishery and success depends on the anglers knowledge on the location of the fish Throughout the year anglers can target striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, false albacore, and flounder.

The best way for anglers to learn this fishery is to get a map and take a ride and then get out of your car and take a walk.

Hopefully the hard freezes will stay away.

Arizona Fishing Report Bass Fishing: Lake Pleasant is starting to fill with water. The change in flows has stalled the bite, but brings with it one of the most anticipated bites of the year once the water stabilizes. During the stall, spoons, dropshot, and some topwater are the best bets. Once things kick in to gear the shallow bite should just explode.

Fly fishermen are still catching them on various baitfish streamers. There have been so. Bartlett Lake has been HOT! Lots of action on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and topwater. There are a lot of solid pound fish coming out right now, pretty much all over the lake. Probably the best bite in the state. Saguaro Lake continues to put out good numbers of little largemouth.

Luck is nothing but the resin of hard work. Feeding a large cuda is no easy feat. Curious and hesitant by nature a Cuda senses the angler from the get go. For this reason spotting a floater that is slowly swimming along from afar could present the opportunity to ring the bell for supper.

The bottom line is that anglers using J-hooks tend to enjoy a higher hook-up rate over a much wider range of fishing conditions, baits, techniques and various size halibut.

The first is through the back, generally just before the dorsal. The trick is to go deep enough so that the hook will hold well, keep rigid and not rip out. This is a great rig for John Dory and kingfish. If you go too shallow the hook can rip out, or the hook may turn and go back into the bait when you strike the fish. When inserting the hook insert the point on a slight angle towards the head, this way it will allow the hook to lay flat along the body when the live bait is swimming.

It will also allow you to strike the fish and drive the hook home easily. Most fish will take a livebait head first so the spines of the fish lay flat on the body and it slides down easily.

Saltwater Report

Newport and Narragansett are hot spots, and these fish are now showing up along the Massachusetts shore, too. Ed Parisi, a bonito and false albacore fishing expert from Tsunami Fishing Tackle, shared his thoughts on how to hook one of these speedsters Monday night at a RI Saltwater Anglers Association meeting. They rely on their sight a lot when feeding so the more you have in the water in terms of line, leader thickness and swivels the greater the chances are that these fish are going to see it and not bite.

I use a pound braid with a to pound fluorocarbon leader with direct tie offs and no swivels. I have never had a breakoff using this weigh line as long as my drag was set properly.

Call me at the shop if you want in – I can best sum up the Christmas Island experience with a quote from one of the guys that we took last year:

We are also having a clinic at the lake the next day. This should once again be an awesome evening at the Nugget. We also have great room rates for anyone coming from out of town. To see the rest of the information on the Event go to http: The lake still has a lot of closed areas and beaches. Nothing was done all summer to fix the road to the North end of the lake. Everything North of Warrior Point remains closed. On the South End Dago and Howards are in the same situation.

Nothing has been done to get these areas ready for fishing season. If you can try to avoid the first couple of weekends at the lake. It is going to be a zoo at the three or four beaches that normally hold fish and fisherman in the fall. This is normal for this time of year and really expected.

Fortunately we all survived and are back at it here at Deschutes Angler. Well the fishing has been surprisingly good over the last couple of weeks for both late fall steelhead and trout. We have actually been putting quite a bit of time in on the water for both species because the weather has been pleasantly mild. On the steelhead end of things sink-tips and larger flies have been the ticket particularly when fished on the Airflo F. The triple density material really slows the fly down without even having to work for it.

As usual for this time of year the fish have come out of the slower moving runs or the slowest part of whatever run we have fished. Trout fishing has been quite good over the last couple of weeks.
